1960s Jeffrey Race midcentury modern house in Lebberston, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
This incredibly striking 1960s Jeffrey Race midcentury modern house in Lebberston, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, is now up for sale.
It’s been a labour of love for two people. The original owner and the current one. Both have made their mark here with a house that’s very much of its original era and a very liveable house in the 21st century.
The house, which can be found in the popular village of Lebberston near Scarborough, dates back to 1966 and, according to the agent, was quite a job to complete.
It took 10 years for the original owner, a structural engineer, to finish the house due to restrictions of the house being in a conservation area. But it was finally completed, and the house is perhaps larger than you might initially think. For bedrooms and two floors, not to mention all of that land and the views beyond.
But there’s another big selling point here: the finish inside, something you can congratulate the current owners for. A mix of the past and the present, with some bold splashes of colour thrown in for good measure.
And for me, that’s the big one. Yes, I love this kind of architecture and the setting is hard to beat. But it wouldn’t have the same impact as a ‘white box’. But by maintaining the original features and the look and feel of the era, this one reaches a little bit higher.
There is much to appreciate, too, from that viewpoint. In fact, it’s hard to know where to start – and what will stay. With regards to the latter, that’s something you’ll have to take up with the owners during a viewing.
But I’ll start with the open reception area, which is also open to the balcony. Love the walls and the fireplace in here, too.
Some lovely wood cabinetry in the kitchen as well, which might well be original. At the very least, it’s in keeping with the era. There is some built-in storage elsewhere with a similar look elsewhere.
I also love that open staircase between the floors, the tiled wall and the colours in the lower hallway, the complementary furnishings and fittings, and if you love your arts and crafts, that amazing studio space, too. That’s likely versatile enough to convert if you don’t need to devote your life to your art. But if you do, it’s a massive bonus,
Elsewhere, modern and fresh. A well-maintained house from the 1960s that works as a house in 2023 without sacrificing the character. And that’s something a lot of buyers are looking for.
As I mentioned, there is more space than you might otherwise think, both inside and out. I’m not sure how much outside space you get, but the photos suggest a good plot here.
Access via the entrance hallway on the ground floor, with that open-tread stairs leading up to the first floor and the majority of the living accommodation.
But before you head up the stairs, note the more functional space on this level, including a ground floor WC, the laundry room, the studio (known as the hobbies room), and the boiler room.
Once you do go up the stairs, you will find a landing, the ‘generous’ living room/dining room with double doors to the terrace at the rear, and the characterful kitchen.
Beyond that is the master bedroom with built-in wardrobes, three further double bedrooms and the family bathroom.
If you need more storage, you can always take advantage of at least part of the double garage space. Or save it for the cars. Either way, it’s a nice bonus.
Note also the extensive driveway for more parking plus gardens laid mainly to lawn, trees and fenced boundaries. Of course, the rear of the property has a terrace, a stoned patio seating area, trees, more lawned gardens and an open view across the countryside.
All of that is within the secluded village of Lebberston, which isn’t too far from Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey if that’s an area you are familiar with.
Just on the market, this one is available for offers in the region of £500,000.
