1960s modern house in Llanfrechfa, near Cwmbran, South Wales
Barely changed in decades, this 1960s modern house in Llanfrechfa, near Cwmbran, South Wales, is up for sale.
And that’s a huge selling point. Yes, there are others. Not least the distinctive architectural design. But having something of a ‘time capsule’ interior’ is certainly going to add to the appeal.
After all, midcentury modern is still big news, and if you want an ideal house to show off your furniture and decorative pieces, then this might be the one. Not least, if you happen to be house hunting in this area.
The house, dating back to the 1960s, is being offered for sale for only the second time since construction. Which is likely why so much originality is still in place. Note that this was an individual design when constructed, a self-build, no less.
And that self-builder didn’t go down the easy route. He or she created something bod, distinctive and very much of the era. A house designed to stand out 60 years ago and still catching the eye today.
Of course, any raised house with a zig-zag roof and balcony would catch the eye. But there’s more to this one than just a bold exterior. It’s also equally as appealing beyond the front door.
And just as importantly, this is a house that might date from the mid-20th century, but it should also work as a house for the 21st century in terms of layout and detail.
You will find it no what’s described as a ‘sought after’ private cul-de-sac, just five minutes from the M4 and 10 minutes from Newport if you have business there. So location ticking the box.
As you might have worked out, this is a house that focuses on the main living space on the upper floor to take advantage of the views, with the more functional space on the lower level. Combined, there’s something like 3,000 sq. ft. of living space.
And much of it is very much rooted in the 1960s. Not quite all of it – there might well have been some less-obvious updates a little further down the line. But the majority of this place is as the original owner/builder intended.
The obvious touches catch the eye. That rather grand front door, some of the flooring and carpeting, internal doors, wood-panelled walls and ceilings, the fireplace, the open reception layout, some vaulted ceilings, the original staircase, and yes, a sunken bath. The ideal backdrop for your ‘60s pad.
No one is pretending that it is perfect, and I suspect the new owner will be looking to make some changes and updates across the board. But if you are looking for something sixties and unique, this could be the project for you.
As I said, there is lots of living space here, with the more functional ground floor offering an entrance hall, a utility/laundry room, a cloakroom, a games room and a 19`x 18`double garage.
Head up the stairs to the first floor for a spacious entrance hall, a study, three reception rooms (one linked), two cloakrooms, a kitchen/breakfast room with Elizabeth Ann units, four bedrooms, an en-suite and a family bathroom with sunken bath. You can also access the balcony from the lounge.
Outside the house is a wide driveway leading up to the double garage and a ‘mature forecourt garden’.
To the rear, you will find a sizeable garden that is terraced with lawns and mature planting, with an additional garden to one side and a lawn/patio off the kitchen to the other.
Definitely worth a view if you are in the area and looking to move. This 1960s modern house in Llanfrechfa is on the market for offers in the region of £600,000.
