New book: Spanscapes by Bryony Aitchison
If Span houses and estates are your thing, then Spanscapes by Bryony Aitchison will almost certainly appeal.
A new title and photobook that is available via The Modernist; this is very much your kind of thing if browsing the estate agent listings for Span houses is your thing. However, it isn’t quite the collection of agency-like photos you might expect at first glance.
No, this is more about the relationship between Span houses and the green space around them.
This 48-page book documents ‘the experience of walking through communal gardens in Span estates in London, Oxford, and Kent’. Span estates and, of course, Eric Lyons have long been admired for their ‘holistic approach’ to landscape design. So through text and photography, Bryony Aitchison explores the relationship between Span’s ethos of creating community and the organisation of green space at the estates.
It’s not for everyone, but if you are reading this website, then I suspect that it just might be the book for you.
It has just landed on the shelves of The Modernist and is available to order right now. If you want a copy, £8 gets you one.
