1960s modern house in Longniddry, East Lothian, Scotland
You will have to be quick to make a move for this wonderful 1960s modern house in Longniddry, East Lothian, Scotland.
Yes, I am back in Longniddry, which was also the location of another modern house I featured back in April. I have written about another previously, too, one of a number of individually architect-designed houses invite area dating back to the 1960s.
This one, whilst maintaining the design of the era, has been updated and, as such, offers a lovely balance between 1960s modernism and modern-era comfort.
But from the outside, this house screams the 1960s. And that’s a massive plus in my book. I’m a huge fan of 1960s modernism, and when a house has maintained its look over the decades without significant alteration, all the better.
Hip, single-storey living with bags of open space within and full-height glazing to take full advantage of the views across that substantial garden. It really is the dream.
But it isn’t a time capsule of the era. By and large, these houses will have been updated in 50 or so years, and this one is no exception. But I like what the owner has done with this one.
Key 1960s details are still in place, although it’s obvious that this house has undergone significant updating and maintenance over the years.
Internal stonework remains, as do the wood ceilings. That kitchen is pretty special too, and I like the retro bathroom as well. You know you are in a 1960s house here.
But beyond that, the finishes are clean and modern, from the light walls through to the wooden floors. Very much the blank canvas for a new owner to make his or her mark. Yes, you could go down the midcentury modern route more if you like, whether that’s in terms of furnishings or decor. But things look just fine to me as they stand.
And if you get bored of being indoors, you will find that the garden is rather special too. And every bit as considered as the internal space. A great place to hang out and relax.
That’s very much a bonus. The house is the big selling point here. And for me, the focal point of this one is that wonderful split-level reception space with full-height glazing, a wood-clad ceiling and a stone feature wall. The living space, the relaxing space, the party space. It’s the hub of the home.
But it isn’t the only pull here. There is plenty more living space to consider too.
Access the house and enter the hallway, which leads into that lovely reception, complete with wood burning stove and doors to the outside patio. Note that the dining room also has access to the garden.
As I mentioned earlier, I love the look of the kitchen with its bold blue units, wood panelling and even an Aga. Beyond that is a utility, a pantry and a cloakroom with WC.
The bedrooms look a good size too. The principal bedroom has fitted wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom, with three further bedrooms and a modern shower room.
But that’s not quite all. The land here is a massive selling point.
The house sits in the middle of a ‘generous sheltered enclosed plot’ that offers privacy as well as space. Mature planting, a kitchen garden area, herbaceous borders, fruit trees, a potting shed, lawns and a sunny south-facing patio area. If a garden is a selling point for you, then this might well seal the deal.
Finally, you also get a double garage and garden store too.
If you want it, you will need to move quickly as bids are due imminently. Offers over £725,000 if you do have an interest.
