1960s modernism: Empson Hill property in Kendal, Cumbria
Thanks to Peter for pointing us in the direction of this 1960s modernist property in Kendal, Cumbria.
Known as Empson Hill, this is a 1960s build that looks largely unchanged in 50 or so years. Of course, that’s not the only appeal. This is a substantial property in Kendal, which is not far from the M6 and also on the doorstep of the Lake District National Park.
If you want land, there is plenty of that too, as well as an additional building plot. The latter has had planning permission granted for a three bedroom detached house should you want to do some developing. Alternatively, sell off the land to recoup some of your outlay for this place.
But that’s not really our focus. We are far more interested in the architecture on the site.
There are two floors, with the majority of the main accommodation on the ground floor, as opposed to the lower ground floor. As we said, not a great deal has changed over the years, so plenty of period features to enjoy.
Obviously that includes the butterfly roof, the wood clad ceilings, the full height windows (although we suspect those have been replaced with double glazing further down the line), the fireplace, room dividers and various fixtures and fittings.
Some of the decor and furnishings have been updated, but overall, this still very much a 1960s house. Perhaps one that’s in need of some work to bring it back to life, but a fascinating one regardless.
As for the space, the ground floor has an entrance hall and cloakroom, leading to a sitting rook with slate feature fireplace, a dining room with slate dividing screen, an open plan kitchen with breakfast room and a conservatory area.
A further hallway takes you to a bedroom and a bedroom, with another hallway leading to three more bedrooms, one with an en-suite. A utility and cloakroom finish things off on this floor.
On the lower ground floor you’ll find four rooms for various uses, along with access to the garage, store and a further WC.
We mentioned the building plot earlier, but there is still plenty of outside space beyond that. The gardens and grounds extend to approximately 1.5 acres and include a swimming pool, as well as lawns, a patio, rockeries and more. A private driveway for parking too.
£850,000 is the asking price.
