Over five decades after its first appearance, Ikea’s 1970s Majsol bedding and fabric are back on the retailer’s shelves.

It’s the latest instalment in something you really didn’t see coming from Ikea – nostalgia. Yes, there has been the occasional retro piece in the Ikea range, but lately, the flat-pack retailer has really gone to town with archive designs.

I mentioned the most recent range when I featured the Nytillverkad collection on the site. Furnishings and fittings from Ikea’s past have been given a second life in the 21st century.

And now there’s the Majsol range, designed to add a splash of 1970s-inspired colour to your bedroom. Or any room if you happen to be handy with a sewing machine. But if you’re not, have a look at the duvet cover and pillowcases, which are available in the unashamedly 1970s colour options of orange or yellow. I love them.

There are two different sizes to choose from, so hopefully, one set will fit your bed. It’s priced well, too, as you would expect from Ikea: around £20 or £25, depending on the size you opt for.

Alternatively, get crafty with that fabric. The design is the work of textile designer Gota Tragardh and was first introduced back in 1971. In 2024, you can buy it once more in pieces of pre-cut fabric. Each section is 150x300cm, and the cost is £18.

The uses are only really limited by your imagination. As you can see, it can be used as curtain material, but I can see this working as a retro covering, possibly even fashion—I know people who have made shirts out of Ikea material.

It’s available now on the Ikea website.
