1960s midcentury modern house in Meir Heath, Staffordshire
Details about this one are scarce, so I am going for a 1960s midcentury modern house in Meir Heath, Staffordshire.
Meir Heath, Staffordshire, is a village just south of Stoke-on-Trent, and this house sits within it. It is offered for sale via modern auction. So, although there’s a guide, the actual price is likely dependent on interest. This isn’t a million miles from a typical sale or a standard property auction. But do check the website for the small print in terms of buying and completion periods.
It’s a house that was individually designed and has been updated over the years. But it is still a striking house for relatively modest money, and if you fancy something retro or midcentury modern in this part of the world, it is well worth a look.
The agent describes this one as a ‘timber constructed detached bungalow’, but that doesn’t really do it justice. The frontage is eye-catching and the interior more impressive than you might think from outside.
Yes, some areas have been updated, and other parts might need some work. But this house, which is available with vacant possession, offers so much potential to create something of interest. The bones are all still there.
The original exterior has only really been altered by the contemporary front door. A quick swap to something more in-keeping would be a quick fix there.
Once inside, you see what the exterior hinted at, which is that wonderful vaulted and angled ceiling with wood cladding across the main reception area. I do like that exposed brick and fireplace, too. Very of its era.
Elsewhere, it’s all pretty plain, just waiting for someone to come in and give if a 1960s-inspired makeover. There’s no shortage of contemporary and affordable products to do just that. Even Ikea has a vintage range these days. Or check out Retro To Go.
More exposed brick is in the hallway and separates off the kitchen (which is fairly recent), the bathroom looks pretty original (at least with the units within), and elsewhere, it’s all pretty neutral. On the face of it, a dream renovation project (but do check the survey and legal documents ahead of the auction).
As for the internal space, an entrance hall is bigger than you might imagine, with plenty of storage, leading to the large lounge and dining room, the focal point of the house. A door from the dining area leads out to the rear garden. The kitchen is just off it, modern and with plenty of space.
There are four bedrooms in total (which is perhaps more than you might have expected), three of which are doubles. The bathroom, as you can see, is a vision in blue. It’s not for everyone, but I can see the appeal of keeping it in a house like this.
As for the outside, there’s a double garage, a driveway in front for more parking, plus lawns and a seating area to the rear.
If this is of interest, you should probably contact the agent about the modern auction procedure and deadlines. The price is guided at £215,000.
