Fancy a retro getaway? This midcentury modern holiday home at Atlantic Reach, Newquay, Cornwall, is now on the market.
But there are a couple of things you need to be familiar with before you plan on decamping down to Cornwall for the entire summer.
First, this is a holiday home situated in a designated holiday park. Therefore, it cannot be occupied full-time. It can be occupied for a maximum of 21 consecutive days at a time. So, three weeks on, have a break, and come back. But you can’t just spend a large chunk of the year here without that break.
You might also have worked out the second thing to consider. This has a service charge, which is currently £2,155 per annum. This includes the building’s insurance, freeholders’ administration charges, repairs to shared areas and the outside of the building, maintenance of communal gardens, and access to the gym, leisure facilities, and swimming pools. Is all that clear? Good, let’s focus on the house.
Midcentury modern in look, but this was actually built at the later end of that period – in the 1970s. You will find it at the Atlantic Reach Holiday Resort and Leisure Club, just 15 minutes from Newquay.
The leisure site occupies the grounds of the former 19th-century Carworgie Manor house, with this particular house positioned at the end of a run of terraced holiday homes. Note also that the house is being sold fully furnished. So good to go for your summer break.
And for a holiday home, it’s a really good-looking house. Someone obviously thought about the design back in the day. It has private terraces, front and rear balconies, and easy access to the pool—everything you want on a sunny day.
The interior is worth talking about, too. Updated, of course, but not radically. Much of the interior is still in line with what was built half a century back. Wood ceilings, full-height glazing, some exposed brick and a semi-open plan layout.
The current owners have done a good job of keeping the midcentury modern theme going, too, both in terms of decor and colours. There’s a strong retro vibe throughout, even after updating things for the 21st century.
The main entrance is via the private front gardens, with access directly into that open-plan living space. As I said, full-height glazing means there’s plenty of natural light brightening this one up.
The kitchen has monochrome chequered flooring underfoot and a breakfast bar to the side, with the staircase just behind. Beyond that is the sitting area, with exposed brickwork painted white and sliding glass doors opening the entire space to the rear terrace and gardens.
Head up the staircase for two ‘well-proportioned’ double bedrooms and a family bathroom. Both have good amounts of storage and their own private balconies, looking north and south across the gardens on either side. The bathroom looks recently updated, which is a good thing.
The outdoor space beyond includes the balconies, which are said to be ‘deep enough’ to provide seating to take in the views and relax. For something more substantial, the front and rear terraces and lawns ‘catch the midday sun’.
You can also get communal access to the gardens and leisure facilities. The latter includes outdoor and indoor swimming pools (one of which is conveniently next door to the house), a clubhouse, a gym, a spa, and a nine-hole golf course. There are also gym classes, an onsite restaurant, children’s play areas, a mini golf course, and more, and it is open all year round.
