Sympathetically updated and yet liveable in the modern era, this 1950s house in Norwich, Norfolk, certainly catches the eye.

In fact, it was but in 1950. I know, it looks older. You would probably have guessed something nearer the 1930s. But midcentury modern and post-war modernism probably didn’t really come to the fore until a few years later.

Not that I have an issue with the way it looks. Far from it. A very appealing house with plenty of kerb appeal and with original details kept in place where possible.

And where it isn’t possible, something akin to the era has been used for the majority of the house. If you want a lesson on sympathetic renovation, then have a look at this one, from the outside gate right through to the fixtures, finishes and furnishings. Ok, the bathroom might be modern, but you probably don’t want to go too ‘old school’ on that front.

Also, a clever use of space here too. You might not think it has much at the first glance, but this is actually a four-bedroom house. This becomes evident once you step in and discover what’s behind the front door.

Before you do, check out the angular design, the plot and that wonderful original gate on the drive. All very appealing and offering a hint of what’s to come once you head in through the front door. Good to see windows in keeping with the original (or possibly original in some cases) as well.

Head in, and you’ll notice the parquet flooring. Not original, but very much in keeping with the original house. Just like the colour scheme across the whole of the property.

The hallway leads to the ground floor bedroom and the lounge. The lounge is double aspect, with a highlight being the original (and restored) fireplace still present. Again, more of that parquet flooring and a bay window boosting the light.

Talking of light, check out those 1950s fittings and an original door to the garden. 1950s retro heaven for someone.

A family bathroom is also off the hallway, as well as a utility. But beyond that is perhaps the star of the show – that amazing kitchen.

Again, this is a space that has been sympathetically restored, with bags of space, storage and character. There are also some double doors opening onto the rear garden/patio. Love that standalone unit too.

The main bedroom is also located at the rear of the property, complete with its own dressing area. Fairly minimal right now; you could probably add an extra layer of the ‘50s to this room if you wanted to.

The first floor is home to a further two bedrooms; both found off the landing. Both bedrooms have plenty of natural light thanks to the skylights. Good for bedrooms, good for home office space too.

As I said earlier, the outside is a big selling point here too. A tiered landscaped rear garden, which has been redesigned by the current owners to make the most of the space on offer.

It’s made up of a patio area at the rear of the house, lawns, higher levels (with steps) to take in some views, a further front lawn, a sizeable shingle driveway (with the previously-mentioned gate) plus a storage unit that looks like a garage and might well have been converted from an original one.

Nice location, a great plot and a lovely retro house. It is just on the market with a guide price of £625,000.
