Looking for a project? This 1960s modern house in Ware, Hertfordshire could be the house of your dreams.

A dream for many reasons. The location for one, which is the popular and semi-rural village location of Dane End. The condition and details within the house, which I will come to in a moment. But also because they just don’t build many houses of this kind of proportion anymore.

If you were buying a new house, you really wouldn’t get the ‘drama’ of what is on offer here and you certainly would not get the space, both inside and out. There is a lot of land surrounding this one, which obviously means the potential of extending, subject to the right planning permissions.

Personally, I love it as it is. Yes, the house needs some updating. That’s obvious to see. But there are features and details here that many will want to retain. This is an architect-designed property that was designed to turn heads and with modest updating, it still will.

My guess is that it was constructed in the mid-1960s. The interior finish certainly suggests that. Some modest updates have been undertaken as the decades have passed, but nothing substantial. Some research suggests the house was constructed by Burns Anderson.

I suspect some windows were replaced, the occasional freshening up of finishes within but not a great deal beyond that. The house itself looks unchanged, right down to the front door. And the key details within looking untouched too.

The size of the house and the angled roof draws you into this one. A substantial house that hints at more beyond the front door. And there is more to come.

Enter in through the front door and you are greeted by the originality of the hallways, with original doors, wood-clad walls and an open-tread staircase. A great start. Original lighting is still in place too, as it is in many parts of the house.

Reception space off there too, with the angled/vaulted wood ceiling in full effect, as well as a large window and 1960s feature fireplace. A similarly-proportioned lounge and dining room are just behind it too, again with a large feature window plus some feature lighting and access to the garden.

Further along is an open-plan kitchen (likely with 1980s units) and breakfast area, with a utility just beyond it, plus a separate WC. Access to the garage from the ground floor as well. That’s quite a substantial space in itself, double the size of a standard garage.

Head to the first-floor landing and in turn, the bedrooms, all described as spacious and with more of those vaulted ceilings throughout. There are four double bedrooms, all looking a little plain now and waiting for someone to come along and add back the ‘wow’ factor. There is also a family bathroom and the master bedroom also has its own en-suite.

As I said, so many period details are untouched and if you want your own 1960s dream house, this is a pretty amazing place to start. But it isn’t just the house that pulls you in. You get so much land with this house too.

The plot is described by the agent as ‘exceptionally wide’ and with fully landscaped gardens, both front and rear.

Both gardens are well maintained, set out on several levels and consist of an initial patio area, mature beds, shrubs, and trees. The front of the house has ‘substantial’ driveway parking too as well as more garden.

It doesn’t come cheap with a guide of £895,000, But houses of this size in desirable areas rarely do. With some work, it could be worth even more.
