It has been updated a little over the years, but this 1930s art deco house in Batley, West Yorkshire known as The White House is still an eye-catching property.
It dates back to 1935, apparently built as a wedding gift, which perhaps gives you an indication of the wealth of the original owners. The current state of the property seems to be heavily renovated, but still full of original period features. The windows, the hallway, the distinctive exterior and the grounds are all key selling points here. But there is a modern feel to the interior, the modern working with the 1930s pretty well.
As for location, well, it’s ideal for access to Leeds and is in the ‘highly regarded’ area of Upper Batley, which probably doesn’t do it any harm. Throw in the art deco appeal and we can’t see this being around for long.
Of course, you’ll want to know about the space. In short, there’s plenty of that both inside and out. The double-height entrance hall greets you, complete with feature ‘built-in chrome clock’, original oak veneer doors and chrome wall lights. There’s also a dramatic curved staircase with period balustrade too, but more of that later.
Let’s concentrate on the ground first, with cloakroom/WC, a lounge with curved ceramic fireplace and original arched French doors to the rear garden, a dining room with curved walnut veneer fire surround and arched French doors, a dining kitchen with an original 1930s solid fuel range cooker and the servant ‘bell box’ from that time, walk-in pantry, utility room, study and a large garden room with glazing to three sides and access to the dining room and rear garden.
Head up that wonderful staircase and you’ll be greeted by the master bedroom with access to an en-suite and a balcony overlooking the rear garden. It also features the original 1930s inset electric fire and chrome wall lights. Also here is a second bedroom with original glazed door accessing a balcony overlooking the rear garden, a third bedroom with fitted wardrobes and original fire, a fourth bedroom and a bathroom with separate WC.
There are also two integral garages, one of which is currently in use as a laundry/sewing room and a large loft space. Outside space includes a semi-circular drive with lawned areas and mature hedging and trees. To the side is a ‘good sized’ vegetable plot, with a large private lawned garden with shrubs and mature trees to the rear. There are also patio areas and a timber summerhouse.
One to view we think (if you have an interest in buying obviously). The price is £499,950. More images on the listing.
