The agent has this down as requiring modernisation. I see this 1960s midcentury modern house in Stevenage, Hertfordshire as an opportunity.
But they are right. It does need modernisation, which is both a plus and a minus. The minus is the cost of the work, as you might have guessed. But the plus points far outweigh it.
The biggest is the generally untouched 1960s design you have here. Not a complete time capsule as some work has taken place over the years in terms of the kitchen and an additional toilet.
But that’s minor stuff. The overall look and feel of this house are still 1960s modern or midcentury modern. Many houses like this have been radically updated over the years. Not this one.
The exterior is quite the picture, with its original shape unchanged, the wood cladding in place and I presume, the original colourful front door surrounded by all that glazing. I really like it.
The rear doesn’t look to have changed either and I suspect not a lot inside over several decades. Yes, the kitchen floor, some decor and that utility space with WC. But outside of that, pretty much nothing has changed at all. It’s a great opportunity for someone to get a house of the era that they can put their own stamp on.
Because it does need some work to bring it back to its best. Untouched is fine, but sometimes houses do need the occasional touch here and there and this is most certainly one of them.
I love the design, the glazing, the timber-clad ceilings, the original light fittings, and the space within the house. But I suspect other parts of the house, such as the kitchen, the bathroom, the decor and the floors might be more in need of some work.
At the end of the day, it’s all down to personal taste, but it is a project. One that should be fun to work on.
You will find it at the head of a cul-de-sac and in a ‘sought-after residential area’. Head up the garden path and you can access the property via that lovely front door and into the entrance hall with stairs, floor-to-ceiling glazing and access to all the ground floor living space.
That includes a lounge with sliding double glazed patio doors to the rear garden and a sliding door to the dining room, which also has sliding, double glazed patio doors to the rear garden. Beyond that is a sitting room, the utility/WC and what looks like a large kitchen space. Finally, a rear lobby leads to a study.
Head up the stairs and the landing area accesses a large loft space. But also up here you’ll find four bedrooms, all with built-in storage and the family bathroom.
Outside is a front garden, which is partly laid to lawn and a large rear again, which is mainly lawn and with timber shed. Finally, as you might have noticed, a garage to the side has an up and over door plus a door to the rear garden.
Offers over £580,000 for this one and I cam imagine it selling fast.
