1960s Thomas Glyn Jones and John R Evans modern house in Dinas Powys, South Wales

One of a group of similar designs, this 1960s Thomas Glyn Jones and John R Evans modern house in Dinas Powys, South Wales, is up for sale.

In fact, I featured one way back in 2015, which was something of a time capsule back then. But it wasn’t this one.

The Cardiff-based team of Thomas Glyn Jones and John R Evans were responsible for six of these Scandinavian-inspired and award-winning houses, all dating back to 1968 between 1972 and all grade II-listed. As you might imagine, they don’t come up for sale Very often. But this one has.

This one doesn’t have the ‘time capsule’ condition of that last one, which is hardly surprising for a house that’s over 50 years old. People have lived in and loved this house over the decades.

But the integrity of the design is still in place. This is the same 1960s architecture, right down to the bold modernist exterior, as you would expect of a grade II-listed house. Only the finishes differ.

And not all the finishes. Fans of the era will undoubtedly appreciate that amazing exterior with an integral garage, ribbed concrete, flat roof (of standing seam aluminium) and full-height glazing. The perfect first impression.

Once inside, check out the open reception space (taking advantage of all that glazing), the cedar wood-clad ceilings, the glazed internal doors, the open staircase, the wood floors and, of course, the terrace access.

It sits well between a modern family home and a 1960s character property. If you want to push more down the 1960s route, there are plenty of fixtures, furnishes and finishes available to do just that. But if you want a large, modern family home with kerb appeal and a ‘60s design aesthetic, you should find this one fits the bill.

And yes, there is a lot of space here. Something like 2,600 sq. ft. that includes five bedrooms and three bathrooms as it stands, So plenty for pretty much any family.

In terms of the layout, enter through that eye-catching front entrance, and you access the entrance hall and large cloakroom. The upper ground floor has s curved wall and spiral staircase, which leads you to the first floor and, for me, the feature space of this house.

Mainly open plan in layout, there is a dining room with a full-width window and a door leading onto the generous front terrace. In addition to that, the lounge has a full-length glass window overlooking the garden. A great entertaining area. The kitchen is just off there, which has recently been refitted and also has a utility room just off it.

The east wing (yes, this one is big enough to have wings) contains the guest bedroom plus a modern shower room. The west wing has two further double bedrooms plus the family bathroom.

The first floor has the master bedroom with a bathroom, while a further bedroom has been subdivided into two home offices (should you spend some time working from home).

From the landing, a door leads onto a rooftop terrace offering some great views over Dinas Powys. Off-road parking too, plus the double garage I mentioned earlier, which is integrated into the house design.

That’s not quite all, as you may have noticed all of the land with this one too. Lawns and shrubs are at the front, but the larger garden is at the rear. That’s mainly laid to lawn, with oak trees plus an apple tree and established shrub borders. Outbuildings also include a greenhouse, a bespoke two-storey play centre, and garden sheds.

Fancy it? The house is now on the market for offers in the region of £775,000.
