Something of an iconic build, although the interior of this 1930s Gerald Lacoste-designed art deco property in Stanmore, Middlesex is perhaps very different to the original.

The house is one of a group of houses commissioned by Sir John Fitzgerald to challenge the bland housing of the day. Each was designed by Gerald Lacoste and dates to around 1934. From the outside, not a lot has changed in the intervening 80 years. But inside is a very different picture. According to the agent, over the last 18 months, the house has been ‘painstakingly renovated’ under the supervision of English Heritage, but the end result isn’t some museum from the past. It is a very modern living space.

That could be because little original was left to work with inside or indeed, the person doing the work simply wanted to take it forward. Either way, this is an old shell with a modern (and clean) interior to work with, ready for someone to come in and add the character.

What has been added is a good dose of 2014, with the Crittal windows now double glazed, an Italian luxury kitchen fitted, all new plumbing installed and complete rewiring undertaken. There’s also underfloor heating, an audio system throughout the house, broadband and internet access in every room, a new security system and much more. Ready to walk into, if you have the money.

As for space, there is plenty of that too, with the ground floor offering  a drawing room, dining / living room, study, kitchen / breakfast area, utility and guest cloakroom. The first floor has the master bedroom plus en-suite and three further bedrooms, each with a bathroom, while the second floor has a double bedroom with en-suite and a living room / children’s play area, along with two further bathrooms. Of course there are two roof terraces too, plus a 135ft rear garden, driveway and garage.

It is on the market for £1,795,000.
