David Bowie’s childhood home in Bromley, Greater London is now on the market. Although it isn’t the only house he lived in as a child.

It is interesting that this is one of his childhood homes. Bowie moved here with his family in 1953 from Brixton. The stay wasn’t long, with the family moving to a larger house in 1956 and then again to a house in Plaistow Grove, which was a more long-term stay.

Bowie stayed in the Bromley area until the mid-1960s, when his showbiz life started to take hold after several false starts. When the money came in, I suspect he didn’t consider going back and buying this particular house.

It’s a fairly modest Victorian terraced house described as being in a ‘quiet residential position’ close to the heart of Bickley on the borders of Bromley.

It is also not some time capsule from the 1950s. Much of the house has been updated, with the outside rendered and the interior fairly neutral.

Two reception rooms are downstairs, there is a fitted kitchen as well as two double bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom. It’s not a million miles away from the house I grew up in.

The house also has a good-sized garden area, which probably needs a bit of attention but would be useful.

The interest lies in its past resident rather than the architecture, and this might well help it sell fairly quickly. But it doesn’t come cheap. You are looking at £449,500 for this one, a huge leap from when it last sold—£124,999 in December 2014.
