I love everything about this 1970s modern house in Milton Hill, Dumbarton, Scotland, from the design to the potential.

I also knew nothing of this development until this house appeared on the market. But now I know, I’ll keep an eye on it, as many of the houses follow similar design principles.

Not that there are many here—far from it. The agent describes Milton Hill as a ‘much sought-after area of Dumbarton’, with a handful of Canadian-style detached homes built around 1970.

The houses’ designs are evident from the images featured here. The architecture obviously appeals to modernists with its angular, modern design. But these houses weren’t just built for fans of modernism. It’s all about the setting.

You can see the setting above—a hillside location, with the River Clyde just in the distance. The heavy glazing in these houses (as well as their position) means some great views across it from much of the accommodation. Design and scenery are in perfect harmony.

This particular house offers something like 1,500 sq. ft. of living space over two levels, with plenty of its own land surrounding it, along with driveway parking and a covered car port area beneath the property.

Has it been updated? Well, yes and no. The design itself hasn’t changed much over the last 50+ years, and many of its internal details—from the full-height glazing to internal brick and timber walls—look faithful to the original design.

But this is obviously a family home that has been lived in and upgraded over the decades. It has a new door, new windows, a new kitchen, a log burner, fresh decor, and a modern bathroom—everything you would expect, really.

But nothing radical. The design and layout seem consistent with the past, with this one just waiting for someone to come in and put their own stamp on it. If that’s likely to be you, let me tell you about the space within.

Access is into the reception hall which in turn leads through to a downstairs bedroom and a separate sitting/living room with patio doors leading out to the garden. Also off the hall is a utility room and a shower room.

From the hall, a staircase leads to an upper landing which accesses three ‘well-proportioned’ double bedrooms. So no shortage of bedroom space here.

Of course, the focal point of the house is the semi-open-plan lounge and dining room, where you’ll get the best views across the Clyde. The lounge has a wood-burning stove, and the dining room is adjacent to the kitchen.

The kitchen looks fairly recent and has everything you’ll likely need. It also has a door out to the side of the property leading to a sheltered terrace. There’s also a large serving hatch through to the dining room. The family bathroom can also be found on this floor.

The outside space is also quite appealing. The sizeable gardens are mainly lawned, and there is a patio area on one side of the house, along with a raised slabbed terrace adjacent to the kitchen on the other side.

A popular area, great architecture and a lovely setting. This one won’t be short of takers. If you want to consider it, this is offers over £240,000.
