This 1960s David Wall midcentury modern house in Newquay, Cornwall, has been in the same family ownership for 60 years. It is now on the market.

It’s a beautiful house in terms of architecture, finish, and location. Just look at the overhead shots to see what I mean about the last point. It’s a stunning place to live.

The design is subtly midcentury modern—not one of the OTT designs you might associate with the period. This one is slightly more traditional, but it has many touches fans of the style and era will love.

Those touches have been well maintained over the decades, too. Yes, the house has been updated in parts, but the main design features are still in place. The rest is something of a blank canvas, which offers the opportunity to go down the ‘retro’ route if you want to add more furnishings and finishes from the 1960s.

But as it stands, this is a single-storey house with some full-height glazing, an angled roof/ceiling, some feature stone detailing on the external wall, some wood cladding within, and a wonderful stone fireplace.

There’s also that other selling point of a midcentury modern house: light and space. I mentioned the full-height glazing, but the open reception space is impressive, too—a real statement space.

I suspect there’s plenty more period detail, too. There are only limited photos available, but I know the agent has more if you are interested. So do get in touch about that – or book a viewing.

The house is located in what’s described as an ‘idyllic, edge of the village setting.’ It sits in ‘peaceful and private extensive’ mature gardens and is within 1 mile of the north coast. The setting is a big selling point.

The agent points out that there is ‘space for re-modelling the current layout’, including extending if you get the right permissions. But I think there is plenty of potential with the current layout. Yes, some updating might be required – the kitchen, bedrooms, etc.- but you could make this really special without major surgery.

The current 1,450 sq. ft. of accommodation is laid out with that spacious dual-aspect and split-level living/dining room, which has expansive glazing offering wonderful south—and west-facing light, plus the feature fireplace.

Beyond that is a separate kitchen and utility, four bedrooms, a family bathroom and two WCs.

All of that land around the house, too, takes up something like 1.4 acres—your very own quiet rural hamlet.

If you want to be just the second owner of this house, it is on the market with a guide price of £1,195,000.
