1960s modern house in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
This 1960s modern house in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, is a fascinating design and a renovation project, too. Interest will be high.
I am guessing at the 1960s, but this one could just sneak into the decade on either side. Regardless of its year of origin, it was the home of a prominent individual in the market town and I suspect, a custom build.
You may know about Hebden Bridge, which is a very popular place to live and visit. It’s also something of an artistic centre and has a reputation for its ‘new age’ community.
Houses tend to be traditional (although that has changed a little in recent years), so this one is at odds with what is commonly offered for sale. Both its size and design will mean this is a popular house. The agent already has several viewings booked in, so if you see yourself as renovating this one, you might need to act fast.
And yes, it does need renovation work. A house that looks like it has been left empty for some time but screams potential. Just a short walk from the train station, this is a large house with valley views and plenty of land that leads into natural woodland. Opportunities like this don’t come around often.
Everyone will have their own view of the ‘potential’ here, but personally, I quite like the design as is—a mix of midcentury design and traditional stone that takes full advantage of its location.
And if you love original details. there are plenty of those still in place, mixed with more contemporary touches across its three floors. That’s right. Bags of space here too.
Wood cladding, fitted furnishings, original lighting, an original fireplace and possibly even some original carpets.
Some decor looks more recent, and some kitchen units look fairly modern, but overall, the house would need a refresh and a rethink, with some details possibly useful in a new design. However, a viewing and a significant amount of investment would be required to bring it back to its best.
It might be worth the effort, too. As I said earlier, this is a sought-after location, and houses of this size (and plot size) are unlikely to come on the market very often. So yes, plenty of work and a good amount of money are required. But you might not get an opportunity like this again in this area.
The space is plentiful and flexible, with the agent suggesting the basement could work as a ‘possible granny annexe’. Currently, it is laid out as a bedroom, utility, bathroom and cellar, with the garage also to the side and accessible from the living areas.
On the ground floor, you will find the entrance hall and two reception rooms with views across the valley. Beyond that is a large kitchen with a store room, a WC, and a substantial double-height conservatory area with a tiled floor. The top floor hosts four more bedrooms, a landing area, the main bathroom, and two balcony spaces off the main bedroom.
I mentioned the outside space, which includes the garage, driveway parking to the front of the house, and plenty of surrounding land. It’s a little overgrown now, but if it’s cut back, it’s likely to be a selling point in itself. It’s nice to have a bit of woodland on your doorstep, too.
As I said, interest will be high at the £335,000 guide price. The house will be sold via auction, which ends on 24 January. Don’t hang about if you want it.
