Art deco-style house in Paignton, Devon

Not just a lovely piece of architecture, this art deco-style house in Paignton, Devon, also has a couple of surprises up its sleeve.

The first is beyond the front door. That’s right, this renovation project has plenty of original details to help you along the way. If you’ve ever dreamed of putting your own stamp on an art deco house, this could be for you, especially at this price.

The other surprise is its heritage, which is hinted at as you get to the upper floor.

The house was built a little later than you might imagine. The agent pitches this one around the late 1940s, possibly into the early 1950s. It’s a 1930s look, but a decade or so later.

It was built for the renowned artist J.H. Willis, and plenty of his work is available to view and buy online if you do a quick Google search. Much of it was no doubt created here, specifically within the amazing art studio that sits at the top and centre of this house.

It’s a very special space, and it does beg the question of what you would do with it. If you love creating art, then this is the ultimate space of your dreams, particularly if you love art deco architecture and this part of the world.

If you don’t get time to paint, then you’ll no doubt have other ideas. It would be a shame to split the space, as it’s so dramatic and an original feature of this house. But I can understand someone looking at this as a family home going down that route.

Elsewhere, there is much to love and just as much potential. This isn’t a ‘time capsule’ of the era, with some updates over the decades, but much of its originality is still in place.

The front door looks like an original (and might well be), some of the windows have been changed to uPVC, heating has been added, and the kitchen space has been updated, but beyond that, this is very faithful to the original era.

Yes, it needs a good amount of work to bring it back to its best. But this is very much a blank canvas, with some original fireplaces still in place, original storage, wooden floors, and original internal doors, to name just a few details. Take a step back, use what you can from the original era, update the necessities to make it liveable for a family in the 21st century, and enjoy a very stylish period house with an interesting past.
There is also a good amount of space, both inside and out.

Head inside, and an entrance hallway leads to the ground floor accommodation, which consists of a sitting room to the rear, with a door opening onto the rear garden. There is also a dining room, a kitchen, a ground-floor bedroom, and a WC.

The first floor has a further double bedroom, a bathroom/WC, and, of course, the crowing glory, which is listed as a bedroom/reception room but is the former art studio. That space has full-width windows to the front and rear, as well as skylights.

Additional space is via the integrated garage, which has further parking space and a small garden to the front. To the rear of the property is an enclosed garden over two tiers with a pathway leading to either side of the property.

There’s one last surprise, too. From the garden, there’s access to a utility room, which in turn opens into a large basement storage area, so there’s even more space to work with.
Just on the market, this one is offers over £250,000.
