1960s modern house in Mapperley Park, Nottingham
This one isn’t a time capsule, but this 1960s modern house in Mapperley Park, Nottingham, is a very cool home.
It was built in the sought-after part of the city back in 1968. The current owners are selling it after living there for the last twenty years and are responsible for its current and appealing condition.
It works a fine line between retro and contemporary. Retro because the key period details are still in place to get your attention. However, the more functional areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom, align more with the modern era.
It’s an interesting design, largely single-storey, with the exception of the gallery area above the main reception. That’s perhaps best shown off via the overheard photos of the house, which highlight just how impressive the architecture is—large, angular, and with a good degree of privacy, courtesy of all those trees.
Updated within, but not to the point where the house loses its character. It has the potential to go further down the midcentury modern/retro route if you want to, with a fairly neutral finish currently in place.
But you don’t need to go too mad with the details. The angled ceilings, the wood cladding and the open-tread staircase are already calling cards for the era. As you can see, coupled with the right furniture, this is a very stylish living space.
And yes, that gallery space is wonderful, too. Ideal for a home working area, it might also be a space to kick back and relax. Either way, it’s a great feature of the house.
A good amount of living space, too, both inside and out.
Upon entering, there is a large cloakroom/utility area, with the hallway leading to a bright, open-plan living/dining space that benefits from plenty of natural light.
It’s the house’s focal point and also has French doors that open to the rear garden. As I mentioned above, an open-tread staircase leads to what’s currently a mezzanine study area, with some views across the city if you get bored of working and fancy some daydreaming.
Beyond that is what looks like a new or recently fitted kitchen, and further along are three ‘generously sized’ double bedrooms and a modern bathroom suite.
That’s not quite all, as the outside space is also a selling point for this one.
The front of the house has a driveway for off-road parking for three cars, along with access to the garage with an up-and-over door and lighting. There are also a variety of plants and shrubs at the front.
The rear has a private south-facing garden with a patio seating area, a well-maintained lawn, a pond, mature trees, and more plants and shrubs. It is a good relaxing and entertaining space with a degree of privacy. The garden also wraps around the house, with a second smaller patio outside the kitchen.
I think that’s pretty much it. The kind of house that you can just move into without worrying about extensive renovations. If that’s what you are looking for, this one has just hit the market for £385,000.
