Great architecture and some great views. This 1930s Robert Lutyens modern house in Torquay, Devon, is on the market and just reduced.
It isn’t the first time it has been on the market. You might recall this one being up for sale a few years back. It hasn’t changed architecturally in that time, but the interior is a little different. For the better, I would add.
A design of the modern movement from the 1930s, it was the work of Robert Lutyens, the son of Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was one of a group of modern homes forming the Broadpark Estate. But as you might have guessed, it didn’t always look quite like this.
Extended space was added in 2006, overseen by RIBA architect Bill Brown of Sustainable Design Collective, Brighton. Details aside, the fact that you struggle to work out what is old or new in terms of the footprint is a credit to the architect.
Of course, it has also been renovated heavily over the years in terms of the finish within. But looking at the previous photos and the current ones, it looks like moves have been made to add more of a vintage or retro feel to this one.
The previous finish was clean and of its time. It is still in that ballpark now, but there’s more character within. It has been stripped back, with some vintage furnishings, midcentury cabinetry in the kitchen, and wooden floors doing wonders for the house. Add in the modern architecture and some killer views and you have a very desirable property.
Located in what’s described as a ‘favoured residential road,’ its lofty location offers stunning panoramic views over the bay, and its updated design maximises these views.
If you want to get yourself right in the thick of it, the house is just 600m from Hollicombe Beach.
Or stay in your house. After the extension/upgrade of the house, there’s plenty of room both inside and out—something like 2,700 sq. ft. over its three levels.
Those three floors contain four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The ground floor also offers an open-plan kitchen/dining room, a sitting room leading to a garden room, and a home office.
But it also offers that outside-inside living vibe, with three balconies making the most of the outstanding sea views. I love how the main bedroom has sea views from literally every corner and opens up to a balcony. What a way to start a summer’s day.
Talking of the outside, there is a private rear garden mostly laid to lawn, numerous vegetable beds, a maple tree, a wildflower area, plus a professionally added flower garden bordered by lavender.
The garden also has a summer house which has a sauna, heating and electrics, which could be used as an office but is currently used as a gym. Finally, there is a single garage and driveway parking to the front.
A lot of house and a sought-after location. This isn’t the kind of house that comes cheap, but it has just been reduced. It is currently on the market with a guide price of £995,000, down from the original £1,150,000.
