Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired modern house in Garelochhead, Argyll and Bute, Scotland
This Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired modern house in Garelochhead, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, is fascinating.
It’s also up for auction, so if you are interested, move fast, as it is a limited-time opportunity. Interesting architecture, great location and the potential to add some value too.
That’s because the house looks to be part-renovated, but with some way still to go to bring it to its best. On the plus side, the price is on its side (all being well), and there might be something in the budget to do the work.
Although you will have to get it first and be in a position to move here. Saying that there might be an option for using this as a holiday home or rental. Something to look into ahead of the auction in case that’s not feasible.
The house isn’t as old as you might think. It was actually self-built in 1980 by architect Robert McLaren, taking inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West if you want to compare and contrast. Of course, this isn’t an exact copy. It is more about taking design cues from certain aspects of it.
The wood, the stonework, the angles, the glazing, you get the idea. Something smaller scale in cedar, concrete and stone, with a wonderful location offering panoramic views to the hills and down the Gare Loch towards the River Clyde.
It still works as a piece of modern architecture and still has something of a ‘wow’ factor when you see the interior. But work is required to bring it back to its best.
As you can see, a new kitchen and bathroom look to have been installed. But beyond that, not a great deal has been done. Which, for me, is a massive plus.
It means all the carefully considered details that make up the interior are still in place. Dressed in a midcentury style, this could come alive again once more.
I love the levels and double-height space, as well as the mahogany wood-panelled walls and ceilings, the open staircase, the internal stonework and that amazing reception area that opens out onto the balcony. The basis of something special is very much on offer here.
A refresh of the internal space, and you will have a house worth talking about for less money than many I feature on here. Well, if it sticks to the guide price.
So much land as well, screened by trees at the side and rear. According to the agent, there are ‘circa 3/4 acres or thereby’. Another massive plus.
As for the internal space, the ground floor has a utility room with an adjacent coat room, as well as a downstairs toilet and one double bedroom.
Beyond that is a dining room with access to a ‘good sized kitchen’ and a large living area with a large balcony. That’s the star of the show. The perfect party space, with options to zone off too.
The first floor contains three double bedrooms, and one bathroom, along with ‘plenty of storage’. A sizeable storage area underneath the house, too, is described as a workshop/utility.
A very narrow window for this one, as the auction begins and ends on 4th May 2023, running between 10am and 12:30pm. You can bid online, and all the details you need are available via the auction website.
The guide price is £230,000 plus fees.
