One of the most popular period houses I have ever featured is back up for sale. The Lagoona 1930s art deco house in London N14.
You might recall I featured this one back in 2014, and since then, it has been viewed and shared perhaps more than any other art deco house I have written about. And that’s saying something, as there is some pretty stiff competition.
Why? Because this house has a picture-perfect frontage. This is the art deco dream. Maintained to a high standard and with a design that really does stop you in your tracks. Anyone with a love of art deco will covet this one.
Eight years is a long time in the life of a house, so you would expect change. I’ll be honest, I have looked at the past listing and the current one, and nothing of significance has changed over the intervening years. That’s a good thing, of course.
As you would expect, some furniture and finishes differ. But nothing you would notice instantly. The house isn’t a ‘time capsule’ inside, but it wasn’t the last time it was up for sale. Instead, you get a house that has been updated but with consideration for the original design.
So a modern-era kitchen and bathroom, as you would expect. But overall, this is a house with a clean finish that mixes the old and the new to create a modern house with heritage and style.
As I often say about these houses, if the bare bones are still in place, then you can do pretty much what you like in terms of the finish. So many art deco designs have been reissued, vintage pieces are fairly easy to acquire, and there is a good amount of modern design (and wallpaper) with an art deco influence. If you want to take this one more towards the 1930s, that’s your call. But if you want to stay fairly modern, you can do that too.
As for the house, I believe it was designed by Frank Woodward, with the house being one of a group of nine within this conservation area and part of the popular Minchenden Estate. This particular house shares its design with two other properties.
The design is both modern and typical of the era, with glazing that invites the sunshine in. This is a very bright house. It also means you get great views over what is quite an impressive garden space. More on that in a moment.
Yes, some updates to bring it up to date for the modern era, with the most obvious being the garage, which looks to be in place, but as you can see in the imagery, has been converted to additional living space beyond the garage door.
The super-stylish Crittall windows are still in place, which adds character both inside and outside the house. Love the colourful front door too and, of course, the fact that there’s a roof terrace in place. Never quite feels like an art deco house without a roof terrace.
As for the living space, the entrance hallway leads off to the largest room here, a bright through reception/dining room with doors leading to the patio area.
Beyond that is a bespoke kitchen with a large window offering some views of the garden, with a second reception room/study (the former garage area) and a downstairs cloakroom making up the rest of the space.
Head upstairs, and you will find four good-sized bedrooms, as well as a family bathroom and a separate toilet. Oh yes, access to the roof terrace too and its views across the London skyline.
As I hinted above, a significant garden area too. The rear garden has a large patio area, as well as a lawn, mature plants and bushes and an additional decking area. Perhaps bigger than you might expect. Off-street parking to the front too.
Now back on the market, it has an asking price of £1,000,000.
