1970s modern house in Scaldwell, Northamptonshire
A wonderfully striking design, this 1970s modern house in Scaldwell, Northamptonshire is now on the market.
It’s a house very much of its era from the outside (which is no bad thing in my book) with an interior that works well in the modern era. Yes, I do say that a lot, but it’s true. Light, open and spacious. It’s exactly what the modern house buyer is looking for.
It also screams potential. Yes, someone could look at this as a possible house to extend – or even replace if I’m honest. But the house as it stands has much to offer, with original details still in place whilst being something of a blank canvas to rework to your own taste throughout.
The house dates from 1970 and hasn’t changed a great deal since. Saying that, it isn’t a ‘time capsule’ of the era. It has been subtly updated over the years. Some fixtures and furnishings are obviously more recent than others.
That’s a plus, as it indicates that someone has taken great care of this one. And they have also taken great care to keep that wonderful kitchen area intact. Rightly so, as it adds so much character to the place.
It isn’t the only original detail. You might well have noticed the wood flooring, the wood-panelled ceilings, original doors and a rather quirky bathroom. All of which add to the appeal.
But as I said, elsewhere is something of a blank canvas. It’s a house that would suit going ‘modern’ or going back to its 1970s roots if you want to add in some bold colours and wallpaper of your own, as well as some design of the late 1960s or early 1970s. A lovely minor project for someone.
Lovely setting too. The house sits off a private road serving three houses in total and is in a plot of around three-quarters of an acre, described as offering a ’high a degree of privacy and protection’ and being a ‘haven for wildlife’.
As a bonus, the design means that all the principal reception rooms and bedrooms enjoy views over the main garden and grounds. So a nice thing to wake up to each day.
And as you probably worked out, all of the accommodation is over one level, with a rather open-plan feel to the space within.
A front door with glazed sidelights opens onto the central oak tiled reception hall, which in turn accesses the principal reception rooms and bedroom wing.
The sitting room is triple aspect, with a wood burner recessed into an exposed brick wall, a wood-clad ceiling and direct access into the rear grounds.
The dining room is double aspect and attaches to that oh-so-retro kitchen. I love the original kitchen units here, as well as the original 1970s tiling. Beyond that is a fully glazed door which opens onto the covered passageway connecting the garage to the property. A utility sits here, with matching units and room for a washing machine.
A large office has south-facing views across the rear grounds as well as a recessed wooden storage cupboard and recessed wooden shelving. Across the reception hall is a further room currently used as a study and both this room and the office could be converted to bedrooms if you needed more sleeping space.
Saying that there are already three double bedrooms, which are accessed via an integral hall with full height recessed storage cupboards. The two main double bedrooms have fitted wardrobes and views over the rear grounds with the third bedroom having a fully tiled en-suite shower room.
Last, but not least, is that family bathroom, which I suspect also has a good amount of original detail still in place despite being updated.
The petrol heads amongst you will appreciate the brick built double garage, which is accessed off the drive and with a covered passageway that accesses a shelved storeroom and entertaining terrace.
A good-sized garden too. I mentioned the driveway, but there are also the lawns, planting, wood and machinery stores plus a wooded wildlife area with a variety of mature specimen trees creating a boundary/backdrop. There’s also a gravelled garden area with brick paved seating and an entertaining terrace that is ‘ideally positioned to catch the afternoon and evening sun’.
So a great house and an equally impressive setting. Now on the market, this one has a guide price of £795,000.
