One of my favourite modern properties, this 1970s Antonio Perella modern house in Climping, West Sussex is now up for sale.

The house was up for sale some years back and was incredibly popular at the time. Distinctive Scandinavian-inspired architecture with a 1970s vibe and something of a rarity too. But this isn’t the work of a Scandinavian architect. Scyld is one of only three houses in the UK designed by the Italian architect Antonio Perella.

It is easy to see why people (like me) fell for this particular house design in the past. A bold design that has barely been touched for decades. Angles aplenty and a period wood finish, as well as some original furnishings alongside the right amount of modern-day updates. A house with character that’s ready to move into.

As I said, the design itself looks untouched from the 1970s, but it has been refreshed for the modern era. Nothing radical. It just looks more like a family home now than it did when the house was last offered for sale in 2018.

New (and appealing) decor, improved flooring, and added style, courtesy of the furnishings and fittings. Just what the house needed.

The outside space has been upgraded too, which had looked a little overgrown in the past. But that’s pretty much it in terms of modernisation. Less is more and the end result, both inside and out, is very appealing.

The full-height windows are still in place, as is all of that lovely wood cladding, the wooden floors, wood ceilings, spotlights, exposed brick, the flowing, open living space, and the distinctive angles that give this one its character.

You will find it in the West Sussex coastal village of Climping and within a 15-minute walk of the beaches. So a nice spot to be in, especially with its woodland setting at the front. There is also access to the River Arun and countryside walks north towards Arundel, which is a nice bonus.

But the main selling point here is that house and its flexible accommodation. Even more flexible if you factor in the large double garage, which could be converted to added living space or an annexe if you need it. Personally, I love this just as it is. But if you need the extra space, the possibility is there.

In terms of the current layout, the focal point is that large reception space and its wall of glass and access to the gardens. But there is plenty of space beyond that room. The ground floor also has a sitting area, dining room, kitchen, and breakfast room plus utility.

Beyond that are two rooms that work either as a study or bedroom space and further along, there is access to that large garage.

Head up to the first floor for the master bedroom with balcony access, three further bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom. One more floor has a large bedroom and a storage area. So more space than you might think.

If the weather is good, there’s even more. The garden wraps around the house so you get the sun all day in your south, east and west-facing garden. At night there’s a fire pit in place to keep you warm and plenty of space for a party or get-together
