1960s time capsule in Palm Springs, California, USA

If bold and kitsch work for you, then this 1960s time capsule in Palm Springs, California, USA is probably your dream house.

It really is something special. A party house from a bygone era, but with more to it than perhaps meets the eye.

Why? Well, all those OTT 1960s details and finishes are still there in all their glory, but a couple of the finishes look a little too fresh. There’s a TV on a bedroom wall too and the kitchen has the look of a space that has been updated to fit in with the rest of the house.

A bit of research suggests that the house has had a bit of a makeover. But all those finishes are genuine and born in the 1960s. It looks like someone has gone out on a limb to maintain them for future generations and for that, we can all be thankful.

The updates to this 1969 build are minimal, so don’t get too hung up on that. The selling point here is that much-preserved originality, a mix of midcentury modern, Hollywood glamour and someone’s attempt to create a regency look with a 1960s vibe.

According to the agent, this was a house ‘built for entertainment’ inside and out. Admittedly the outside is less of an attack on the senses, almost subdued in comparison. But very much in that ‘party house’ mould. You can imagine the great and the good flocking around the pool, glasses in hand, well into the early hours.

Or just stay inside and wander around the terrazzo-floored halls lined in velvet flocked Mylar wallpaper, taking in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors and windows, the vintage furnishings and of course, the colour.

That colour isn’t everywhere, but when it is there, you really do notice it. The green of the dining room and the living room overlooking the pool. Or the pink bedroom, green and blue bedrooms, as well as the bold bathrooms. A pair of shades might be required by some, especially early in the morning.

Or if you want something more subtle, have a look at the ‘Tom Jones inspired lounge’, home to more than a few cocktail parties I shouldn’t wonder. Hit the jukebox, pour yourself a drink and get lost in a bygone era.

A special mention for the bathrooms too, which are as opulent as they come. One looks bigger than the average bedroom by some distance.

Talking of space, you get 3,350 sq. ft. of that, which includes three bedrooms and three bathrooms. A I hinted above, you also get a reception, a dining room, a bar/lounge area, what looks like a further reception, a covered patio and more.

Outside, the frontage isn’t as exciting as you might imagine, but you do get a sight of the large garage, driveway and lawns at the front.

The rear is where the action is, with the house opening out onto the pool area, the terrace and outdoor seating. As I said, a party waiting to happen and no doubt the scene of some pretty wild gatherings in the past.

The area and size of house dictate the price, with this one on offer for $1,969,000 if you want some colour in your life.
