1960s modern renovation project in Berendrecht, Belgium
A great opportunity at a great price. This 1960s modern renovation project in Berendrecht, Belgium.
Thanks to Stefi Orazi for flagging this one up, which is for sale at a reasonable price, but you will have to move fairly quickly as there is a deadline in place for any offers. More on that at the end.
For now, let’s talk about the house, which doesn’t have a year (or an architect) attached to it. But I am presuming it is 1960s and probably the early part of that decade. Not that years really matter. The architecture and details are key. Not that it is a former rectory too, which accounts for the cross on the outside off the house.
The design itself has something of a midcentury modern vibe with its angular roof and heavily-glazed doorway, although the interior doesn’t quite match what you might expect.
That’s not a criticism. More of an observation. The interior is pretty much untouched from the original build, right down to the smallest detail. But it looks a little earlier than I would have expected from the outside.
Well, mostly The main reception with its wood ceilings and orange brick fireplace is about as 1960s as it comes. But the doors, the radiators, the lighting and especially that amazing kitchen area have more of a 1950s vibe about then to these eyes.
Either way, there are so many period details you would want to treasure here. Ok, the wallpaper needs an update, the curtains too and not all the light fittings are keepers. But overall, this is a house that forms the basis of a wonderful midcentury home with a bit of work and thought.
As a former rectory, this is a house that is currently a mix of work and living space, which you can adapt to fit your needs.
As it stands, the detached house has a large office space to work with, as well as three bedrooms and a large basement ‘with natural light’. That should add in even more options for tweaking the layout. Of course, there is also the reception and kitchen too.
A good-sized plot as well, covering 40 sq. metres and with a ‘monumental beech tree’ within.
If you want to live here, €286,000 is the asking price with sealed bids due in by the 10th July 2020.
