Circular modern house in Batcombe, Somerset

Nice to see something exciting and contemporary on the market. Specifically, this circular modern house in Batcombe, Somerset.

Known officially as Ash Tree House, it is located in the village of Batcombe, which is surrounded by ‘picturesque countryside’ in the valley of the River Alham. But not too isolated, with the market town of Frome and Shepton Mallet just a short drive away and a train route to London from nearby Bruton too.

But you might not want to leave once you set yourself up in this house, which dates back to 2012 and was designed by the present owner in collaboration with a local architect (no name sadly) with a brief to create something unique, but with green credentials.

Definitely job done on the former, with this bold circular design very much a ‘head turner’, especially in its rural location.

Light and space were obviously top of the wish list, with walls of glass looking out across the gardens and beyond and the double-height space adding some drama to the interior.

The openness of the interior layout is quite something too, especially when it comes to the main reception areas. Love the open-tread staircase and gallery, as well as the flow of space over the two levels and beyond – that glazing opens up onto the patio and gardens, bringing the outside in.

The main access is from the rear, with the entrance hall leading to the open-plan living room with balcony, and the gallery. From here you can also access the snug, a study (which can work as a fourth bedroom if you need it) and the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and balcony. There is also a cloakroom on this floor.

Head down that staircase to the lower level and you get more open-plan living in the form of the kitchen/dining/family room space. The kitchen is, of course, as sleek and modern as you would expect of a house of this type.

There are two further double bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom, a shower room, as well as a utility room and the plant room.

That’s only half the story though. The finish of this one also sells it, from the contemporary lighting to the decor and details within. This is a house produced with no expense spared and maintained to a very high standard. Have a look at the images here and on the agent’s site to get a feel for that.

The property is approached via a private driveway where there is parking for a number of vehicles in addition to the garage. The rear garden is mainly laid to lawn, surrounded by trees and shrubs, with a contemporary pond and a large terrace to take in the unspoilt rolling countryside beyond.

Quite something, I’m sure you’ll agree. But it does come at a price. That price is £1,499,950.
