Updated but absolutely stunning. This 1930s art deco house in Shrewsbury, Shropshire is now up for sale.
Thanks to Christopher for pointing me in the direction of the house, which can be found in the ‘desirable residential area’ of Copthorne, dating back to 1930.
As you know, sometimes I see renovated houses from this era and worry. After all, the selling point of a 1930s house of this style is the detail, and much of that can be lost when someone undertakes a renovation. Thankfully, we don’t have to be concerned about this one. The house has been ‘sensitively restored’ by (presumably) the current owners, updating it where necessary, but at the same time taking care to keep the period details and character that are key to the appeal of any art deco house.
The original architecture has been given a makeover (and possibly extended), the custom-made Crittall metal windows are obviously in place and once inside you might well notice the internal doors, a rather amazing fireplace, a stained-glass feature window and original storage units.
Elsewhere, the finishes and details are fresh, but very much in keeping with the original period. Yes, the kitchen is large and contemporary, but there is no getting away from that being a selling point in a family home in the 21st century. Overall this is still a period house, but one that hasn’t forgotten that it is also a modern-day family home.
Upon entering the house, you’ll find an open reception area with underfloor heating and corner windows. To the left is the first reception room with original integral cupboards, while on the right is a ‘well-equipped’ and ‘spacious’ home office/study with a period door leading to the rear garden.
Beyond that is the modern-day kitchen space with all the built-in appliances you would hope for and expect, as well as an audio sound system and TV. The kitchen leads to the dining room, which retains a nibbler of original art deco features and a ‘spacious’ family lounge with underfloor heating and Crittall metal double doors opening onto the rear garden.
Head up the original staircase off the reception for the first-floor space, which includes three bedrooms, two of which have en-suites and built-in storage. The first floor also has a roof terrace with ‘high parapet walls’ for privacy, a covered balcony area and PIR lighting. The second floor has a private guest suite with a shower-room en suite plus a further roof terrace.
Outside is a rear garden with an outbuilding with mains electricity connection, which could be used as a summer house, hobby room or office. You also get a garage with access front and rear, as well as off-road parking and some period-style walling to match the house.
An absolute gem of a house and up with a guide price of £575,000.
