Remodelled 1960s Eashing House in Godalming, Surrey
I spotted this one back in 2014. Now the remodelled 1960s Eashing House in Godalming, Surrey is back and at a cheaper price.
It looks like the finish and the decor has changed in the intervening years, going from something rather eclectic to a finish more in keeping with its minimalist / modernist surroundings. To my eye, it looks far better today than it did in 2014 inside.
But overall, little has really changed since it was last on the market and since the house was given its extensive makeover.
That work was courtesy of Jake Edgley of Edgley Design, who has transformed a 1960s house (which I haven’t seen in its original state) into what you see today.
The original silhouette of the house was preserved, but the obvious difference is the cladding, which offers both insulation and a distinctive finish in stainless steel. The design apparently won the Architects Journal Retrofit Award in 2014, with the work completed a year earlier in 2013.
The overall effect is a house that straddles two eras. You can see that this was once a 1960s modernist house and inside details like the exposed brick, the beams and the open, flowing space are certainly reminiscent of that era.
But first and foremost, this is a contemporary home and a substantial one too, with over 5,000 sq. ft. of living space to play with.
The house is mainly laid out over a single floor. The front door leads to a large entrance hall which opens onto the kitchen and a reception room with full-height glazing overlooking the gardens.
Beyond that is a ‘long’ bedroom wing which takes in the seven bedrooms, four of which have en-suite bathrooms, plus a family bathroom. The master bedroom also has a dressing room, a freestanding bath in the en-suite bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling glazing for views across the gardens.
There is also a utility room and a wine store on the ground floor, plus a second reception room (which could be used as a bedroom if the seven existing bedrooms don’t cover it) on the first floor with a bathroom.
A lot of outside space here too. You are looking at a plot of around 2.5 acres, with the front being lawn and a circling driveway which provides parking in addition to the gravelled parking areas.
Beyond that is a hard-surfaced tennis court, rear gardens with more lawn, mature trees and finally, a garage block.
The asking price of £2,500,000 isn’t cheap, but as I said earlier, it is cheaper than it was four years ago.
