Dating back to the 1970s, this WSA Williams-designed The Knoll in Beckenham, Kent is now on the market.
Located on a private road in the centre of the town, this early ‘70s build was constructed by the architect for his own family back in the day, with a number of features from that era still present.
But don’t expect a time capsule with this one. Yes, the fairly austere frontage looks unchanged, as does the amazing open reception area. But a closer look shows plenty of more recent detailing, from the kitchen and family bathroom down to the light fittings. That staircase? It has the look of a more recent upgrade too, but check with the agent if you want to know for sure.
Not that it matters. The ‘vibe’ is still very much of the original era and the upgrades are what you would probably expect of a house over four decades old. I like it and suspect a good many of you will too.
Head through the electric gates and access the ‘large’ forecourt, which itself leads to the integrated garage and the house itself. That house is over two levels and offers around 2,445 sq. ft. of living space.
The ground floor is pretty much that open plan reception area, an L-shaped space with exposed brick walls, concrete lintels and cedar-clad ceilings built around an internal courtyard. That design ensures plenty of sun from three sides of the house, along with ‘various access points’ to the surrounding garden.
To the right of the entrance hall is a study with sliding doors to the internal courtyard, and internal access to the garage / workshop, while the left takes you to there kitchen with original white ceramic mosaic tiling and more glazed access to the garden. Finishing off the grind floor is a guest WC with a Twyford ‘Barbican’ wash basin.
The open-tread cherrywood staircase takes you to the first floor, with views through double-height glazing to the courtyard below. On the first floor are three ‘similarly sized’ bedrooms with built-in wardrobes by Phillipe Starck and a mosaic-tiled shower room with roof light.
At the far end of the house is the master bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a large en-suite bathroom with a roof light. Floor-to-ceiling aluminium-framed windows extend ‘uninterrupted’ across the entire upper floor, ‘flooding each bedroom natural light’ according to the agent.
