Coastal modernism: Six-bedroom property at Cooden Beach, Bexhill, East Sussex
You might have a little surprise if you pick up this six-bedroom modernist property at Cooden Beach, Bexhill, East Sussex.
That’s because it has a celebrity owner. The seller is chat show and radio host Graham Norton, who has decided to give up this wonderful beachfront house around eight years after purchasing it. Why? Who knows. Not sure I’d be quite to quick to sell if I got my hands on it.
The ownership is just a side issue really. The house is more than worthy of a place on these pages in architectural terms alone.
An individually designed house (we haven’t got a name sadly) and an award winning property, the house faces out onto the sea and comes with its own swimming pool and a private beach area. If you get bored of those spaces, kick back on the terraces or in the landscaped gardens.
As for the design of the house, there is cladding in African Iroko teak with ‘wrap around’ balconies giving an uninterrupted view over that private beach and beyond. When summer comes, this really be something. I’m guessing there’s less need to fold back those windows and bring the outside in when the weather turns wet and windy (like today). Saying that, it does have underfloor heating, so you should be pretty toasty once inside.
As for space, well that’s as high end as you expect, with everything pretty much show home standard and with much of the reception open plan.
In terms of the breakdown, an entrance hall (with cloakroom/WC) leads to the lounge, dining room and kitchen area, with a utility, further cloakroom, snug and access to the garage.
A second floor master suite has bi-fold glass doors opening out onto that wraparound balcony, along with floor-to-ceiling windows taking in the countryside at the back. There’s also a bathroom in marble with a roll top bath and large window with views out to sea.
Three more bedrooms also access a sea-facing terrace and a large guest bedroom has an en suite bathroom. If you need more space and work from home, you’ll be pleased to know that a separate outside studio / office is also included.
Quite a house and as you might have guessed, quite a price. This one is up for £2,300,000.
