1960s modernism: Austin Vernon & Partners-designed townhouse in Giles Coppice, London SE19
Always a popular area, so this 1960s Austin Vernon & Partners-designed modernist townhouse in Giles Coppice, London SE19 should prove a popular find.
The house was the work of Malcolm Pringle, then of Austin Vernon & Partners, dating back to the mid-1960s. It’s a house very much of its era, but at the same time, one that still works in the 21st century.
That’s hopefully shown off in the images on this page. The current owners have done a wonderful restoration job here, bringing out the best of the 1960s features, but at the same time ensuring everything is up to scratch for the modern era.
That isn’t just a lick of paint. It includes replacing the flat roof, insulating walls, updating the electrics and using a reclaimed Sapele parquet for the main living space.
The end result is a really hip property with a strong retro vibe, helped along by a plethora of design pieces from or inspired by the original era.
As for the space, that’s over three floors and includes a large open-plan living / dining area (with access to the balcony), a separate kitchen and a WC on the ground floor, with three bedrooms and a family bathroom (which we like very much) on the first floor. A utility room and a garage can be found on the lower ground floor.
Another benefit is likely to be like-minded neighbours too. These places always seems popular with architecture and design buffs, so you can assume people like yourself are there already. They are probably enjoying the landscaped communal green space around the houses right now. Or at the weekend at the very least.
This is up with an asking price of £675,000.
