On the market: 1960s Murray, Ward & Partners-designed modernist property in Arford, Hampshire

This place was on the market just over a year ago. Now the 1960s Murray, Ward & Partners-designed modernist property in Arford, Hampshire returns with a new agent and a lower asking price.

If you missed it previously, let us tell you that the house dates back to 1963, the work of London-based practice Murray, Ward & Partners and commissioned by an artist. That large elevated space was originally the artist’s studio.

Things have changed since then. The artist has departed and the house has been updated and tweaked buy subsequent owners. So not quite the original house, but changes haven’t been too radical thankfully.

The wooden ceilings are still present at the heart of the house, as is the exterior cedar cladding, interior exposed brick, glass brick walls, a concrete fireplace and (we would presume) the original spiral stairway. Indeed, much of the house retains something of a ‘retro’ feel despite those updates.

Elsewhere you’ll find more modern finishes, which are pretty much down to the decor. If you wanted to carry on with the retro / midcentury vibe throughout the house, it’s probably just a case of calling in the decorators and going shopping for some new bits and pieces.

With the changes made over the years, this is now a three / four bedroom house and still south-west facing, which should mean plenty of light. Much of that will be in the dominant space of the open-plan kitchen / dining / living area, with its long picture window and panoramic views of the village and the river below.

If the rest of the layout is unchanged from last year, you will also find two bedrooms on the first floor (the master with access to the large roof terrace) plus two further bedrooms one with en-suite on the ground floor. A further studio / home office with separate kitchen was also mentioned as being accessed from the ground floor.

There is a driveway leading to the front of the property for plenty of car parking, plus a good sized plot of gardens, terraces and mature trees.

If all of that works for you, the house is on the market for £695,000.
