On the market: 1960s Rossington & Fogden-designed modernist property in Tavistock, Devon
Great scenery and a rather stylish dwelling too. That’s the 1960s Rossington & Fogden-designed modernist property in Tavistock, Devon.
This is a late 1960s construction that still retains that ‘wow’ factor, even from a distance. Close up and inside you will notice this place has been updated, but that’s hardly surprising in almost 50 years.
What is important is that the updates haven’t taken away any of the impact of this place.
That’s probably because the key features are still in place. A two-storey property perched high on a hill, with large windows taking in all of that wonderful scenery. With half an acre of land, a good amount of what you survey is likely to be yours too.
But beyond that, you’ll find ‘far-reaching views’ across Tavistock and to the open countryside, including Kit Hill and Bodmin Moor beyond. A private gate to the rear of the property also leads directly onto Dartmoor.
Anyway, enough of the location (although that is a major selling point here) and onto the house itself.
As we said, two levels of living space, although there was permission granted in 2011 to add another floor if that is what you need. But for now, let’s look at the present, which starts off with an entrance hall on the ground floor leading to the kitchen and dining room on one side, with a ‘secondary’ reception room, bedroom, bathroom and utility room on the other.
Head up the stairs near the entrance and you’ll find a first floor with four further bedrooms (one master with en-suite) and what is described as a ‘wonderful triple-aspect living room’ with views over the rest gardens as well as the front, taking in the town of Tavistock and the moors beyond.
You also get a terraced area, accessible through glazed doors if you want to get some air as you take in the scenery.
As we mentioned, the gardens are substantial, with half an acre of lawn, trees and grape vines. Also present is a summerhouse, a swimming pool with surrounding terrace, ‘ample’ parking space on the drive and a double garage with a workshop / store area.
If you want to move in, the asking price is £725,000.
