On the market: 1960s Reginald Gale-designed midcentury property in Barnstaple, Devon
I’m guessing you haven’t seen a living room quite like the one in this 1960s Reginald Gale-designed midcentury property in Barnstaple, Devon. Big thanks to Nick for the tip off.
It is the first time on the market for Blindwell, which was designed and built by Reginald Gale in the late 1960s for his own occupation.
It is quite a place too. The exterior is quite understated, but designed to take advantage of the south facing views, with plenty of outdoor space for taking them in when the sun shines.
But it the inside that really sells this place to us. The house has been extended relatively recently and the kitchen upgraded around the same time. But outside of that, the house has its 1960s excesses well and truly preserved.
The extensive glazing, colourful floating walls, the central copper-clad fireplace, the exposed stone, the beams, the staircase and the gallery areas. The heart of this home is very special and you would hope, something that any right-minded buyer would want to preserve.
Plenty of space to go with the style too, as well as planning permission to extend further if you wish. But for now, let’s focus on the here and now.
That kicks of with the front door with coloured glass inset and matching side panels, leading to an entrance lobby, a reception hall and that wonderful general reception area with beamed vaulted ceiling, Sicilian Marble floor with under floor heating and an exposed stone wall.
That drops down to the sitting area with central stone chimney with a fireplace topped in copper. There is also an internal water feature here, as well as a built in fish tank. Further on is a lower study area with an additional coloured glass screen specifically designed to ‘accommodate the Christmas tree in season’.
Moving along, you’ll find an upper dining area overlooking the garden, a study area and that updated kitchen / breakfast area with utility room. Finishing off the ground floor is an inner lobby, a cloakroom, separate WC and a studio / family room.
Head up the stairs and you will find a galleried landing overlooking the reception area, an inner landing, the master suite with sun balcony, a further bedroom with balcony, three more bedrooms, a store room and a family bathroom.
Head outside and there is a long driveway/ parking area, a double garage, an office / workshop, a greenhouse, a sun terrace and extensive gardens, along with a water garden. The plot covers around 1.2 acres.
If this is your kind of place, it is offers in excess of £1,000,000.
