On the market: Bryan Tanner-designed Dominoes 1960s modernist property in Stoke Gabriel, Devon
Huge thanks to Jake for firstly spotting the place and then sending over the Bryan Tanner-designed Dominoes 1960s modernist property in Stoke Gabriel, Devon.
As you can see, it is quite a place.
Dominoes was designed in the early 1960s by architect Bryan Tanner for himself and his family. Obviously this is a house they loved, as this is the first time the property has been on the market since its construction.
Found in what’s described as a ‘stunning’ waterside location, the property offers elevated views of an expanse of water known as the Mill Pond, with the considerable front glazing on the higher level ensuring you get the best possible view without leaving the house.
So a great location and a stylish modernist structure. Can the inside live up to both? It certainly can.
Little has changed here over the years, which we consider a big plus. The agent says that some updating is required and that’s likely to be the case. But looking through the photos (and without seeing a survey), we would guess that much of the work needed could be cosmetic. The kitchen looks to have been updated, so work probably has been undertaken over the years. But you probably need a new bathroom in here and perhaps a tweak of some of the finishes. Outside of that, we would’t be making wholesale changes.
Why would you? After all, there’s the original Scandinavian wood burning stove here, exposed brick, wood panels aplenty, an open staircase and so much more. A house unashamedly of its era and likely to be loved because of that.
In terms of the living space on offer, the lower ground floor is where you will find the entrance hall, with stairs rising to the main reception room. On this level there is also a shower room/WC and separate store or utility room, which could be converted if you get the right permissions.
Head up to the upper ground floor and you will encounter a large open plan living / dining room with large double glazed windows, the kitchen (with access to the rear garden), three bedrooms with views to the front of the house and a wet room.
Outside space includes a driveway, parking area, covered car port and the ‘delightful’ natural garden, with views from there to the water and surrounding farmland.
Certain to be a dream house for many, Dominoes is on the market for £625,000.
