A stunning house in an equally stunning location. You can see why we are flagging up this 1930s coastal art deco property in Plaidy, near Looe, Cornwall.
Known as Gradna House, it is said to have been built for the Wills Tobacco family in the 1930s as a holiday getaway, passing into the ownership of Lord Bath in the 1940s. It continued as a residential property for some decades after, but stood empty for 20 years until a local businessman picked it up around 1990.
That’s when the hard work began. We don’t know just how much work was needed, but the fact that architect Stan Bolt oversaw a decade-long restoration suggests it was extensive. It also indicates just how much effort and money went into what you see how.
We are guessing some changes have been made to the original design, with the agent talking about both a ‘renovation’ and ‘re-styling’ of the property. But the end result is still pretty magical and very much in keeping with the original era.
Of course the house is the headline grabber, but the location runs it a close second. A cliffside property, it has sea views over Looe Bay taking in West Looe, St. George’s Island and up the coast towards Rame Head, which separates Looe Bay from Plymouth Sound. If that’s not enough, this place also comes with 1.7 acres of land.
So a great setting and a wonderful house. There’s a wow factor inside the place too. Enter on the lower ground floor level by what’s described as a ‘huge oak pivot door’ and you will find a double height entrance hall, utility and the staircase to the upper ground floor.
That floor contains the bespoke fitted kitchen and dining room, sitting room and drawing room across the front of the house and as such, offering great views out to see from inside or outside, courtesy of the part-covered slate terrace.
An open tread oak staircase with lozenge-shaped atrium takes you to the first floor and to the five bedrooms, all with sea views, with three accessing the 23ft decked terrace. From there you can also head up a ladder to the copper roof. Also on the first floor is a fitted bathroom and separate shower room.
Outside you will find a garage, described as ‘an architectural masterpiece in its own right’ and with a convex copper roof, folding cedar doors and glazed rear elevation. Not just a garage, it also has a small office area off to the side and spiral steps down to a ‘spacious’ studio / workshop area beneath.
We mentioned the land, which is laid out as four terraces with many ‘unusual and exotic’ plants, as well as mature trees and shrubs. There is also a separate area of woodland belonging to the house too. Electric gates are also installed, with a granite paved entrance offering parking and turning space.
All in all a seriously stylish house that’s packed with high-end features and fittings, but still offering an overall look and feel of the original era. If it appeals, you will need to find something in the region of £3,000,000.
