Midcentury in the north east
On the market: 1960s midcentury-style Denton House five-bedroom house in Rowlands Gill, Tyne And Wear
Hidden away in the north east of England is a real gem, this 1960s midcentury-style Denton House five-bedroom house in Rowlands Gill, Tyne And Wear.
We’re second guessing the era and we don’t have an architect name. But we can see this is something special from that era – open plan living and the kind of ‘indoors meets outdoors’ built you would expect see in the US rather than the UK. The stone cladding, balconies, angled roof, quirky windows – we’re definitely sold.
So it has an original look, but there has been improvement over the years. Central heating and (part) double glazing, not to mention updated fixtures, fittings and decor. It’s a period home, but also modern-day living space. As for the house itself, it sits in a mix of formal garden and woodland, with a double garage and swimming pool (the latter not currently used) at the rear of the property.
Head in and you’ll find an entrance hallway with large store plus staircase leading up to the first floor. Off the half landing is a study or fifth bedroom with fitted book shelving and a cloakroom/WC. At the top of the stairs is a dining room with panelled sloping ceiling overlooking the gardens, leading to a sitting room glazed on two sides, also overlooking the gardens. That goes through to a garden room, looking out over the private garden, with a lobby also on this floor.
Stairs lead back down from the sitting room through to a dining kitchen with utility room leading off. Stairs from the previously-mentioned lobby goes to the rest of the accommodation, including two double bedrooms with built in wardrobe units, two single bedrooms and a dressing/ironing room or fifth bedroom. A family bathroom is here too.
All of that in one acre of land and selling with a guide price of £595,000.
