When we started WowHaus, this is exactly the kind of house we intended to feature. This 1930s Marcel Breuer-designed Sea Lane House in East Preston, West Sussex, that is.

It’s an iconic build, the only house in Britain to have been wholly designed by the great Bauhaus-trained architect and designer Marcel Breuer. Nothing more needs to be said…but we’ll say a little more anyway.

It’s a grade II-listed property as you might have guessed, dating back to 1936 and built in association with British architect F.R.S. Yorke. The house has been owned by the same family since the 1940s and remains largely unaltered from the original designs. That means a rare faithful property from the era, but one that needs a little work to bring it back to its best.

The house has six bedrooms, with a bedroom wing raised on concrete columns. There’s also a first floor living room with an open fireplace, a dining room with access to a sun terrace and garden, and a ground floor kitchen with a larder and utility room. If you want more living space, apparently the architect intended there to be the possibility of one of the bedrooms being used as a second reception room or study. So feel free to do that.

Outside, there is plenty of garden (including a vegetable garden), with the property on a corner plot straddling the ‘prestigious’ Kingston Gorse and West Kingston Estates. There are also two garages plus driveways for further parking.

If all of that appeals, the price is £795,000.
